Shape proposed Courtice Waterfront and Energy Park

Clarington is creating a plan to support the existing energy business cluster in the Energy Park and shape the future of south Courtice with a new residential neighbourhood and park along the waterfront.

The municipality s asking residents and stakeholders to join the conversation on March 9 at 7 pm.

For the Waterfront Park the choices included beach access, bike trails, natural parkland, picnic areas, pier, skate park and trails.

Clarington is also asking what types of businesses and amenities should be located near the Waterfront Park. Choices included pubs, restaurants, shopping, ice rink, an amphitheater and a splash pad.

Apparently, housing is also planned and residents were asked to choose between low-rise, mid-rise and high-rise.

For the Energy Business Park, choices for services that would support businesses in the park, included convenience store, gas station, convention centre, hotel, day care and restaurant.

The Energy Park is currently home to the Darlington Energy Complex and the Durham York Energy Centre. The recent announcement by OPG to relocate their headquarters to Courtice will bring over 2,000 jobs to this area. This move will spur the growth of an energy cluster and attract additional jobs to this area, said the municipality.

After the second meeting on March 5, 2020, the municipality reported that feedback included that:

  • There should be a waterfront destination park with amenities to attract tourists;
  • Development of the waterfront to create a ‘western gateway’ for the municipality;
  • There should be better access for a variety of modes;
  • Trail connections along the waterfront and over the 401 would be great for recreation in the community; and
  • There were concerns about compatibility between existing and planned land uses.

  1. Bring back nature to the whole area, The area is too small for urban development. What will bring tourists is a functioning and sustainable ecosystem ie. nature.
