110kmh gusts down power lines across Durham

Thousands of residential and commercial facilities across Durham were affected as forecasted strong winds downed trees and power lines.

Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) had to close Regional Road 1 between Ashworth Road and Sandford Road in Uxbridge due to wire down. “Please avoid the area. Thank you,” it said.

An alert from DRPS Central East Division advised: ⚠️Caution⚠️ Heavy rain and strong winds have caused numerous downed power lines and power outages. Reminder… DO NOT approach downed lines ⚡️and treat intersections as 4 way stops.

90 to 110 km/h winds

Environment Canada updated its weather warning reporting that a cold front swept through southern Ontario yesterday afternoon bringing very strong southwest winds with gusts of 90 to 110 km/h. Winds were expected to ease by Monday morning.

Power outages are likely. Damage to buildings, such as to roof shingles and windows, may occur. High winds may toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break, it said.

Meanwhile, the Town of Whitby closed the public pier for residents safety due to high winds. “Thank you for your cooperation. Stay safe, Whitby,” said a town tweet.

With the severe weather, the City of Oshawa asked residents to report trees down, street lights out, flooding and debris blocking roadways.

It also reminded residents to not approach downed power wires and never touch power lines as they could be charged.

Elexicon Energy announced that it experienced multiple outages across its service territory due to high winds. “System controllers and crews are responding to restore power as quickly and as safe as possible. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience.”

It said one of the areas affected was Lakeridge Road South from Bayly Street East to Range Road, ETR.

Oshawa Power reported close to 2,000 customers were affected by yesterday’s power outages.
