Thief gets away… but turns himself in hours later

A suspect tied to flee but was arrested by Durham police after a theft incident on Tuesday in Whitby.

On  December 10 at 7 am, members of Central West Division responded to a theft at the Walmart on Baldwin Street in Whitby. The suspect entered the store and stole several video games and left the store without paying for the merchandise, said a police media release.

The suspect got into a vehicle and drove away. Officers responded quickly and attempted to stop the vehicle in the parking lot. The suspect refused to stop and then fled through the parking lot almost striking the police vehicle. The suspect vehicle was pursued on Baldwin Street until the suspect drove onto a dead end street. The suspect then fled on foot, police searched the area with negative results, it added.

Hours later, the suspect Francis Ameyaw, age 21, of Buttercup Lane in Brampton turned himself in at Central West Division. He was charged with: Theft Under $5,000; Fail to Stop for Police; Dangerous Operation; Drive While Under Suspension and Disobey Lawful Order. He was released on a Promise to Appear.

The stolen goods were recovered.
