Thousands of apple bins destroyed in Algoma fire

Clarington Emergency and Fire Services battled a large fire at Algoma Orchards early yesterday.

The emergency call came in at 3:39 am. In total, around 45 firefighters responded to the fire that was confined to the apple storage bins behind the main sales facility. Five pumps, five tankers, an aerial and six support vehicles were on hand to help extinguish the fire. No one was injured during the operation, said a statement from the municipality.

It took Clarington Fire several hours to get the flames under control. The fire was put out by approximately 7:30 am as crews worked on several hot spots. Clarington Fire will monitor the area to ensure there are no flare-ups, it added.

“There’s extensive damage in the storage facility. Thousands of apple bins were lost. The cause of the fire is unknown. Clarington Fire is working with DRPS to investigate,” said Clarington Fire Chief Gord Weir.
