Two men arrested for fraud at Whitby Home Depot

Two Toronto men are facing several charges after attempting a merchandise return scam at a Whitby Home Depot store on Saturday.

On September 14 at 5:15 pm, officers were called to the Home Depot store on Victoria Street for a fraud in progress. A male was attempting to return merchandise when store employees became suspicious and contacted police.

It’s believed the male suspect obtained a Home Depot credit card in Cobourg using fraudulent identification. He purchased merchandise using the card in Cobourg and attended the store in Whitby to try and return the items without a receipt. Police arrested and charged the male along with a second male suspect who was waiting in a vehicle in the parking lot. Police seized a fraudulent driver’s license and Social Insurance card along with the Home Depot credit card.

Kwabena Ansere, age 39 of San Romano Way in Toronto and Randy Amofa, age 31 of Weston Road in Toronto are charged with: Fraud Over $5,000; Personation; Possession of Identity Documents (x2); Possession of Credit Card Data; Possession of Property Obtained by Crime and Possession of Counterfeit Mark (x2). AMOFA also faces several Breach related charges.

Both males were held for bail hearings.
