Two failed BMW thieves caught via false report

Durham Police have arrested and charged two individuals in relation to an attempted carjacking that occurred in Ajax.

On Friday, February 9 at about 2:20 am, members of West Division responded to the Petro Canada on Dundas Street West at Lake Ridge Road for an attempted carjacking.

The victim was walking to his vehicle when he was approached by one of the suspects who asked the victim for his keys. The male victim was pushed down to the ground. The suspects fled as they were unable to steal the white BMW electric vehicle.

After a thorough investigation, it was discovered that the vehicle the suspects used to flee the scene was reported stolen from Durham Region. However, further inquiry revealed that the vehicle actually belonged to a family member of the suspect, and the report was falsely filed, police said.

On Tuesday February 27, members of the Provincial Carjacking Task Force executed a warrant in the area of Wicks Drive and Kingston Road in Ajax where two individuals were taken into custody without incident.

One suspect, age 18 and another, age 33, were charged. Names and further details available at www.drps.ca.

Anyone with information about this investigation is asked to contact D/Cst. Reeves of the Major Crimes – Robbery Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 1825.
