Durham Region witnessed one of its biggest cultural celebrations as Unity in Diversity hosted Durham Garba Fest 2026 – Whitby at the Abilities Centre on Sunday, October 11.
Garba is a traditional folk and devotional dance from Gujarat, India, performed during Navratri to honour the divine feminine. The circular movements, colourful traditional clothing, rhythmic clapping, and community participation make Garba a powerful expression of culture, faith, identity, and togetherness.
The indoor Garba celebration brought together some 2,000 people from across Durham Region and the Greater Toronto Area for an evening filled with music, dance, tradition, community spirit, and giving back.
Organizers claimed the event as Durham’s largest Garba celebration ever, marking a major milestone for cultural celebration in the region.

The event featured a live performance by well-known Garba artist Nick Pandya, who performed in Whitby for the first time for Garba. Held on the first day of Navratri, the evening created a vibrant atmosphere as families, youth, seniors, newcomers, and community members came together to celebrate the devotional and cultural tradition of Garba.
The program opened with the national anthem and aarti, followed by two rounds of Garba and Dandiya. Throughout the evening, attendees enjoyed music, dancing, food, prizes, and a festive indoor celebration inside one of Durham’s largest community venues.

The celebration also carried a charitable purpose. During the event, Unity in Diversity presented a cheque for $2,001 to Lakeridge Health Foundation, continuing the organization’s commitment to using cultural events as a way to support meaningful local causes.

“Durham Garba Fest is not only about music and dance. It is about bringing people together, celebrating culture, supporting local families, and giving back to the community,” said Pankaj Panchal of Unity in Diversity. “Seeing so many people come together in Whitby for Garba was a proud and emotional moment for our entire team.”

Organizers also thanked the sponsors, volunteers, performers, food partners, community members, and venue staff who helped make the large-scale event possible.

With strong attendance and community support, Durham Garba Fest 2026 – Whitby has set a new benchmark for cultural events in Durham Region. Unity in Diversity plans to continue building inclusive community celebrations that bring people together through culture, service, and shared joy.
