The Town of Whitby announced that it has awarded more than $30,000 in funding to seven local community organizations who are supporting the response to Covid-19.
The funding will help the following organizations enhance the delivery of important services in the community, including online resources to help vulnerable community members:
- Alzheimer’s Society – $5,000 to convert family support, counselling and education programs to a virtual platform
- Caremongers – $2,000 to support the provision of necessities not available through local food banks for vulnerable community members
- Community Care Durham – $5,000 to support the delivery of “Community to Table” food boxes to vulnerable community members
- Feed the Need – $5,000 to purchase food for those in need
- Lakeridge Community Support Services – $3,480 to support family support programs for children with autism
- Luke’s Place – $5,000 for enhanced online and phone services to support women and their children fleeing domestic violence
- Salvation Army – $5,000 to purchase food for those in need
The initiative is a part of the Mayor’s Community Development Fund (MCDF), which provides financial assistance to local community groups, events and initiatives that help contribute to Whitby as a vibrant and caring community, said the announcement.
“As a town we are committed to doing everything we can to support our local organizations and vulnerable populations who are being impacted by Covid-19,” said Mayor Don Mitchell. “We’re all in this together and need to continue to make sure that people who need help and support have access to it from home.”
