Youth sets fire to barn, damage worth $500,000

An 18-year-old male has been arrested for setting a barn on fire in Blackstock last week, said Durham police.

On January 25, members of North Division responded with fire services to a large barn fire on Church Street in Blackstock. The Fire Marshalls office concluded their investigation and the damage to the structure was approximately $500,000, police said in a media release.

Members of the North Division Criminal Investigations Bureau conducted a parallel investigation and were able to identify the suspect responsible for the arson. An 18-year-old was arrested for the arson and was also charged with other offences stemming from an ongoing dispute with the owners of the property.

Shayne King, age 18 of Chimney Hill Way in Scugog, has been charged with Assault x2; Assault with a Weapon; Weapons Dangerous; Utter Threats to Damage Property; Utter Death Threats; Attempt to Choke; Mischief to Property Over $5,000 and Arson Causing Damage to Property. He was held for a bail hearing.
