10 trucks found to be ‘overweight’

Ten commercial motor vehicles were found to be overweight in a one-day initiative in Hampton. Some others were taken off the road due to safety concerns.

Durham Police’s East Division, with the assistance of the Traffic Services Branch, North Division and the Ministry of Transportation (MTO), conducted a one-day commercial vehicle initiative on March 4 focusing on weight restrictions on the roadways in Hampton.

This initiative took place during the Seasonal Load Restriction Period (March 01 – April 30), which limits the allowable weight per axle to 5,000 kg. on most Clarington and Oshawa roads, said a police media release.

Ten charges were issued for overweight loads during the Load Restriction Period, and three vehicles were taken off the road due to defective brakes and insecure loads. One trailer was also taken out of service for being unsafe, it said.

Officers and MTO laid a total of 22 charges, including an arrest and charge for a driver who was operating a pickup truck despite being prohibited from doing so due to an impaired driving conviction, it added.
