900 Pickering, Ajax casino gaming workers go on strike

Some 900 members of Unifor Local 1090, who work at Ajax Casino and Pickering Casino Resort, began strike action at 12:01 am on July 31, according to an union statement.

It said the strike action was taken after negotiations with the employer failed to produce a fair contract for nearly 900 gaming workers.

Unifor Local 1090 represents a wall-to-wall bargaining unit at both properties, including workers on the gaming floor and in cash cages to food and beverage, housekeeping, bus drivers, and shipping and receiving personnel.

“Our members at Ajax Casino and Pickering Casino Resort have made it clear they are prepared to walk the picket line to get a fair deal,” said Unifor National President Lana Payne. “These workers kept the resort running through difficult years, and all they are asking for is fair wages and job security.”

The picket line at an entrance to Pickering Casino Resort at 888 Durham Live Avenue, was yesterday led by Greg Weaver, Local 1090 president.
