Durham police have revealed that the victim in Durham Region’s second murder of the year, has been identified as 24-year-old Thisal (Sam) Sanjula Perera.
The first homicide of 2026 reportedly took place on February 22, when a 78-year old was found dead in a Clarington residence engulfed in flames (see below). A 23-year old suspect has been arrested on manslaughter charges.
With reference to Perera, 0n Tuesday, April 14, around 12:40 am, members from West Division responded to an initial report of a break-and-enter in progress at a residence in the area of Harwood Avenue North and Taunton Road East in Ajax.
Upon arrival, officers located an adult male suffering from traumatic injuries. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
At this time, investigators believe this was a targeted incident and there are no concerns for public safety.
The Homicide Unit has taken over the investigation and is asking anyone who was in the area of Harwood Avenue North and Taunton Road East between 12 am and 2 am, who may have cell phone, dash‑cam, or surveillance footage, or any information, to contact police.
