$9mn gas tax funds to be invested in Durham transit

The Region of Durham is set to receive  $9,633,396 through the 2025-26 Gas Tax program, according to the provincial government.

The funds will primarily be used to support public transit, which in Durham is represented by Durham Region Transit (DRT).

Durham is a vast, mainly rural region with far-flung communities – especially in the northern townships of Brock, Scugog and Uxbridge, where transit connectivity has been an issue.

The Ontario funding is intended to be used for local public transit initiatives such as expanding service hours and transit routes, purchasing new vehicles and improving accessibility to increase transit ridership.

It is part of nearly $380 million that is being invested as part of the 2025-26 Gas Tax program; which aims to support public transit in 107 municipalities.
