Freezing rain followed by snow yesterday caused power outages across Oshawa, even as motorists were asked to drive carefully.
In its weather advisory update for the region, Environment Canada said 10 to 15 cm of snow is expected to fall by today (Thursday) morning.
Additional lighter snowfall is expected Thursday for the Greater Toronto Area, however, there is still some uncertainty regarding the additional associated snowfall amounts, it said.
Environment Canada projected reduced visibilities. “Motorists should expect hazardous winter driving conditions and adjust travel plans accordingly. Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery,” it said.
Durham Police said the North Division is asking motorists to please stay off the roads if you do not need to be out – the weather is making driving conditions treacherous.
Meanwhile, power outages were reported in Whitby and Oshawa.
We are experiencing a power outage in our service area. Boundaries affected are: Kinsmen Court, Price Street and Way Street. Crews have been dispatched, approximately 24 homes and businesses affected, said Elexicon Energy, while later announcing the restoration of power.
Oshawa Power was quick to alert residents. “With inclement weather in the forecast, our teams are ready to respond to any and all outages to ensure your power is restored quickly and safely.”
But Oshawa was not so luck last evening reporting more than 3,600 power outages across the city.
“Thank you for your continued patience while our crews and control room work to ensure all service is safely restored as soon as possible,” said Oshawa Power.
