Freak plane crash kills teen on Lake Scugog dock

A 16-year old has died after being struck by a float plane that crashed on Lake Scugog near Williams Point, in the area of Caesarea, on Friday afternoon.

According to Durham Regional Police Service, officers from North Division responded to reports of a small plane crash around 12:30 pm on July 18. Multiple emergency services were dispatched to the scene and remained there throughout the afternoon.

Officers arrived on scene and located a plane that had crashed into a dock as well as another boat.  The plane flipped over; however, the pilot and passenger were able to exit with minor injuries.

A 16-year-old male was on a dock at the time and was struck by the plane.  He was pronounced deceased on scene.

In an update later that day, police confirmed that a male in his teens died after being hit by the aircraft. The pilot was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries, and a passenger on board the plane also sustained minor injuries.

DRPS said the names of those involved are not being released at this time. “Our thoughts remain with the male’s family and those impacted by this tragedy.  Furthermore, we are requesting privacy for the family.”

Members of the Durham Regional Police, alongside members of the Transportation Safety Board of Canada remain at the scene and are continuing the investigation.
