Off-duty firefighters rescue boaters after impaired crash

A 36-year-old Whitby man is facing impaired driving charges after a boat crash Monday evening that sent three people, including a seven-year-old child, into the water near the Whitby Marina.

According to Durham Regional Police, officers from Central West Division responded around 9:20 pm on July 21, following reports of impaired boaters en route to Whitby. The vessel crashed into the rocks near the marina, throwing its three occupants overboard.

Fortunately, off-duty firefighters in a nearby boat witnessed the incident and quickly intervened, helping bring all three individuals safely to shore. The DRPS Marine Unit arrived shortly after and towed the suspect boat back into the marina. No injuries were reported.

A 36-year-old man from Whitby was charged.
