A vigil in memory of slain American Charlie Kirk was held in Durham the same day a memorial, attended by U.S. President Donald Trump, was held in Glendale, Arizona.
Described as a right-wing political activist, entrepreneur and media personality, Kirk was shot dead in Utah on September 10 by alleged assassin Tyler Robinson. A memorial service was held on Sunday September 21 at Glendale.
A vigil was held the same day in Oshawa.
“Thank you to everyone who joined the vigil for Charlie Kirk in Oshawa tonight and to those who supported in spirit from afar,” said a social media post from an organizer.
“It was nice to connect with so many new and familiar faces. It was truly inspiring to witness people coming together with such conviction. The evening was moving and uplifting, and I was especially proud to hear MP Jamil Jivani share a few words. It really was a beautiful evening at Lakeview Park,” said John Meloche.
He told Durham Post that the vigil did not face any hate or protests at the event, which was reassuring.
“That said, it’s clear that people hold strong feelings about Charlie Kirk on both sides. In moments like this, I try to remember what I was taught: if you have nothing productive to say, it may be best to say nothing at all. Words matter, and you might be surprised to learn where those close to you stand on an issue. At the end of the day, we should all strive for open, fair, and respectful dialogue without alienating our neighbours for having different opinions,” said Meloche.

What fresh hell???? The man was a white supremacist and twisted the words of Christ to further his own hateful agenda. Being dead doesn’t erase the hate he spread! Stop pretending he was a good person!
