RIDE Week II: 17 charged with impaired driving, 3 for drugs

DRPS completed its second week of the 2025 Festive RIDE program, stopping 1,568 vehicles and charging 17 drivers with impaired driving offences.

Officers conducted RIDE checks throughout the Region of Durham with the following totals (the numbers in brackets reflect 2024 second week totals for comparison):

  • Vehicles stopped by RIDE: 1568 (2162)
  • People given Roadside Breath Tests: 58 (232)
  • People received 3-Day Suspensions for registering an Alert: 6 (18)
  • Novice Driver received a 3, 7 or 30 License Suspension: 3 (1)
  • People were charged with Drinking and Driving Offences: 17 (17)
  • People arrested for non-impaired driving related offences: 2 (5)
  • Other Criminal Code Charges: 5 (5)
  • Highway Traffic Act Offences: 142 (238)
  • Drug Offences: 3 (2)

During the second week of DRPS’ Festive RIDE program, officers removed 17 impaired drivers from the roadways. Although this number is consistent with last year, fewer vehicles were checked this week, resulting in an increase in the impairment rate from 0.78 per cent to 1.1 per cent.

The RIDE team worked in conjunction with the Ministry of Transportation in conducting Mandatory Alcohol Screening for Commercial Motor Vehicles entering the Whitby Truck Inspection Station.

Fully licensed drivers are required to have a blood alcohol concentration less than 80 mg per 100 mL and yet, our average breath sample for our arrested parties since the start of the 2025 Festive RIDE program is 150 mg per 100 mL, which is almost double the legal limit.

A complete list of those charged with Impaired/Exceed is posted on www.drps.ca under RIDE Results.

Note: Under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, anyone charged with an impaired diving criminal offence will have their driver’s licence suspended for 90 days and their vehicle impounded automatically for seven days.
