New tool to help you plan your extra home unit

The Town of Ajax has partnered with Resimate to launch an online property mapping tool that tells homeowners their property’s suitability for an additional dwelling unit (ADU).

An ADU is a separate, self-contained dwelling unit on a homeowner’s property for family or tenants to live in. Examples of a detached ADU include a garden suite, tiny home or backyard home, while attached examples include a basement or upstairs apartment.

The town said the ADU Property Mapping Tool provides the following information for each applicable property in Ajax.

Eligibility for an ADU, listed as:

  • Suitable or Likely Suitable (for detached and attached units);
  • Internal/Attached (a detached unit is not permitted, but an attached unit likely is)

Not Suitable (ADUs are not permitted on the property).

  • Property details like lot area, zoning and minimum setbacks.
  • ADU details like backyard buildable area and maximum height permitted.
  • Parking details.

To use the tool, homeowners can visit map.resimate.build and type their address in the search bar.

Homeowners interested in starting an ADU project will need to confirm and fulfill all zoning requirements and can discuss options with town staff by contacting the Planning & Development Department at the Ajax township website.
