Regional staff are moving forward with the detailed design work for the Durham Meadoway project, according to the Town of Ajax.
The Durham Meadoway Visioning Study, endorsed by Regional Council in June 2024, outlines a framework for implementing a regional active transportation corridor and linear park from Oshawa through to the Rouge National Urban Park at the Pickering and Toronto border.
The vision is to create a quality, regional-scale greenspace and complete active transportation corridor that will stitch together rapidly growing neighbourhoods in Pickering, Ajax, Whitby and Oshawa.
With the visioning now complete, detailed design works include identifying the locations for gateways, amenities and other features along the multi-use route, including proposed secondary uses on Hydro One transmission corridor lands.
Cost-Share Agreement
The cost-share arrangement for the Shared Services MOU to complete the detailed design was determined by regional council to be proportionally split based on the new infrastructure needs in each municipality.
In Ajax, the Meadoway as proposed, would run adjacent to Taunton Road from the eastern border with Whitby to Westney Road, at which point it would follow the hydro corridor southwest through Paulynn Park including a portion along the Trans Canada Trail.
This project supports the town’s broad sustainability goals, including increasing pollinator habitats, wetland restoration, and tree canopy expansion. It complements existing trail infrastructure and would align with the existing cycling network. Its implementation would also include a consistent strategy for public art, trailhead access and wayfinding signage throughout the project, including connections to the Trans Canada Trail, said the town.
Ajax’s contribution is based on the proportional length of the Meadoway within its boundaries, recognizing that much of the road infrastructure is already in place along Taunton Road.
Financial Implications: The Town’s share of the detailed design of the project cost is $119,292 plus the appropriate contingencies. This amount is currently not budgeted.
