Alto high-speed rail getting real with Durham PIC

Crown corporation Alto which is proposing Canada’s first-ever seven-city high-speed electrified rail between Toronto and Quebec City, has announced that its GTA open houses will begin Thursday, February 12 at the Chestnut Hill Developments Recreation Complex in Pickering from 11 am-3 pm and 5 pm-9 pm.

Alto is kicking off a three-month long public consultation process with more than 20 open house information sessions in various communities between Toronto and Quebec City, eight virtual sessions, and a dedicated online information platform.

The launch of public consultations marks a concrete step forward in the project’s development and pre-construction phase. Input gathered will help inform the selection of the rail network alignment and station locations, while guiding efforts to minimize impacts, promote inclusivity, and strengthen local benefits.

Public consultations on the corridor will take place from January to March.

The Network

With stations in Toronto, Peterborough, Ottawa, Montréal, Laval, Trois-Rivières and Québec City, this project will connect millions of Canadians living along the country’s most densely populated corridor. Alto aims to bring cities and people closer together and create significant socio-economic benefits that will help generations to come.

The Timeline

On December 12, the Federal Minister of Transport, Steven MacKinnon, joined by Alto President and CEO Martin Imbleau, announced that the first segment of the High-Speed Rail Network will run between Ottawa and Montreal.

Construction of the Ottawa-Montreal segment is expected to begin in 2029.

Alto estimates the project is expected to boost GDP by up to $35 billion and create tens of thousands of high-quality jobs across the country.
