Ontario’s Special Investigation Unit (SIU) has stepped in to investigate after an officer and a man were shot by another officer during an incident in Oshawa yesterday.
At about 11 am on January 18, Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) attended a residence on Cedar Street in Oshawa for a mental health call, said the SIU.
Soon after arriving, officers encountered a 27-year-old man who was armed with a knife. There was an interaction, and one officer discharged their firearm multiple times. The man was struck as was a police officer, SIU said.
The suspect was transported to a local hospital with serious, non-life threatening injuries. The officer was also transported to hospital for treatment. They are both in stable condition.
At this time, it does not appear that the suspect had a firearm, SIU said.
Five investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case, it added.
The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.
According to a report submitted to the DRPS Board in October 2022, there were five Mental Health Support Unit Crisis Response teams, with each team consisting of a Police Constable and a Registered Nurse. With five (5) MHSU Crisis Response teams, the MHSU has been able to expand coverage to seven days a week, allowing for increased coverage and support across the Region of Durham (see below).
