Responding to parents’ concerns, Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) yesterday provided an update, stating there are multiple active investigations related to William Dunbar Public School in Pickering.
Parents continue to feel unsettled following a recent hold-and-secure alert (see below) and what they describe as insufficient communication and supervision during the event, said Sam Snyders, a member of the community.
He said local families are particularly concerned that children were kept in portable classrooms for extended periods without school supervision, and that parents received limited and delayed information from authorities.
“This has contributed to fear and frustration among caregivers who want to support their children but feel they are not being kept fully informed during situations affecting safety,” Snyders said.
Several Recent Incidents
DRPS said there have been several incidents, including a reported threat, that officers have responded to at the school, over the past several weeks.
It did not detail the “incidents”.
“We understand the concern that incidents of this nature can create for students, staff, families, and the wider community. DRPS shares these concerns and remains committed to supporting the safety and well-being of everyone connected to William Dunbar Public School,” the police said.
No Risk To Public Safety: Police
“Our investigators are actively managing multiple ongoing investigations related to these incidents, including the assessment of the reported threat. Due to the active nature of these investigations, specific details cannot be released at this time. However, based on all information currently available, DRPS does not believe there is any immediate public safety risk to students, staff, or the school community,” said the police statement.
However, as a precaution, DRPS will continue to maintain an increased police presence in the area. Officers will closely monitor activities in and around the school, and members of 19 Division’s School Liaison Unit will conduct additional visits to provide support, engage with students and staff, and reinforce safety and reporting practices, police said.
It said DRPS remains in close communication with school administration and our community partners as these investigations continue. The service is committed to ensuring a safe learning environment for all.
