The Municipality of Clarington Council has reaffirmed that no additional municipal financial support will be provided beyond fencing and security for preserving the historic Camp 30 Cafeteria Building.
Following a delegation from the Jury Lands Foundation, Clarington Council gave the Jury Lands Foundation until the end of 2026 to secure funding to stabilize the deteriorating World War II building.
Council cited “years of municipal investment, volunteer efforts, and escalating potential costs for broader restoration, as the reason for withdrawing further financial support.
It said staff will continue coordinating with the Jury Lands Foundations to meet safety requirements, and, once funding is secured, oversee the restoration project.
Staff had submitted a report seeking direction on next steps for the Cafeteria Building. The Cafeteria, which is the only building owned by the Municipality of Clarington within the Jury Lands, requires a significant financial investment to stabilize, partially retain, or demolish due to its poor condition.
The ongoing costs to maintain the fencing (materials and staff time) as well as the contract for 24 hours per day of security at the site, were estimated at $20,789 + HST per month, tracking to total costing of roughly $249,500 per year.
