Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) said over the past weekend, officers conducted the 2026 Super Bowl RIDE initiative across the Region of Durham, stopping 177 vehicles and charging two drivers with impaired driving offences.
Vehicles stopped: 177
People given a Roadside Breath Test: 21
People received seven-day suspensions for registering a warn: 2
People were charged with Impaired Driving Offences: 2
DRPS reminds residents that its officers are on duty 24-hours-a-day, 365-days-a-year, ensuring roadway safety and reducing impaired driving in Durham Region.
New Impaired Driving Rules
DRPS reminded the public of new impaired driving rules in effect as of January 1.
These new rules include the following changes:
A warn (50–79 mg of alcohol per 100 mL of blood) reading on an Approved Screening Device will result in:
– 7 day suspension for a first offence
– 14 day suspension for a second offence
– 30 day suspension for a third offence
– Mandatory remedial driver training and substance-use programs
will also apply.
The legal limit for alcohol consumption is 80 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood.
Note: Under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, anyone charged with an impaired driving criminal offence will have their driver’s licence suspended for 90 days and their vehicle impounded automatically for seven days.

Earlier, DRPS Traffic Services had warned that it’s Super Bowl once again.
“If you plan on having a couple of wobbly pops, or some left handed cigarettes, please don’t drive. Do the right thing, plan ahead and secure a safe ride home.
