Most Durham municipalities have announced that flags have been lowered to half-mast in recognition of the lives lost in the mass shooting at a school in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia.
The shooter has been identified as 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar by the RCMP. At least nine people are reported to have been killed, including the suspect. There was no word on the number of injured.
Profound Sorrow: Oshawa
The City of Oshawa has lowered its flags to half-mast at City Hall and city facilities to honour the victims of the tragic events that took place in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia on Tuesday, February 10, said a city statement.
“On behalf of City Council and the City of Oshawa, we stand together with the family, friends and colleagues who are mourning the passing of loved ones following yesterday’s tragic events,” said Oshawa Mayor Dan Carter. “We share in your profound sorrow and our hearts and thoughts are with the entire Tumbler Ridge community during this incredibly difficult time.”

Horrific Act: Whitby
Whitby Mayor, Elizabeth Roy, yesterday said the flags at all Town of Whitby facilities will fly at half-mast, effective immediately, in honour of the victims of the mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. Flags will remain lowered until the end of the week.
“On behalf of Whitby residents, I offer my deepest condolences to all those impacted by this horrific act of violence. Our thoughts are with the families who have lost loved ones, those recovering from injuries, and the entire community of Tumbler Ridge during this unimaginable time.
“As a fellow mayor, I was especially struck to hear that in a small, close-knit community, the mayor knew all the victims personally. That speaks to the deep bonds that exist in towns like theirs — and like ours. When tragedy strikes, the grief is shared by the whole community,” she said.
“Whitby stands in solidarity with the people of Tumbler Ridge and mourns alongside you,” she added.
Tragic: Ajax
Yesterday, all Town of Ajax flags were lowered to half-mast in honour of the victims and all those affected by the tragic mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia.
Flags will remain lowered until Friday, February 13. “Our thoughts are with all those affected during this difficult time,” said a town statement.
Devastating: Clarington
Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster said: ““My heart goes out to everyone in Tumbler Ridge, BC, after this week’s devastating school shooting. Like every Canadian parent, my heart breaks for the families in this small community going through this terrible tragedy. Our community in Clarington shares the sorrow, and our thoughts are with everyone navigating this unbearably tough time.”
