Ajax plans to prohibit parking from 1am to 5am

Ajax is proposing year-round overnight parking enforcement as well as extending the overnight parking prohibition, among several other measures, under the town’s Traffic By-law review.

The purpose of the review is to update the By-law to meet the demands of today’s traffic environment, said a town statement.

Several changes to the By-law are being proposed with regard to enforcement practices and procedures. A summary of these changes includes:

  • Changing the parking prohibition from 3 am to 6 am to 1 am to 5 am.
  • Altering the proactive overnight enforcement strategy from seasonally (in the winter months) to a practice that is in effect throughout the year.
  • Introducing a new prohibition for vehicles ‘hanging into the road’ from the paved apron section of the boulevard. This offence would not allow a vehicle to be parked on an apron that encroaches on to the travelled portion of the road.
  • Increasing the minimum parking distance (on the roadway) from 1m to 1.25m metres away from the entrance to a private driveway.
  • Increasing the minimum parking distance from an intersection from 10m to 15m.
  • Altering enforcement of parking on or over a sidewalk from daytime hours to 24hr enforcement.

Changes to the Traffic By-law are being proposed in order to:

  • Provide clarification of infractions,
  • Respond to resident complaints and current community trends
  • Address a 30% increase in by-law parking complaints regarding three-hour and overnight parking limits,
  • Increase the efficiency of By-law Services staff, and
  • Ensure that the Traffic by-law remains the appropriate tool so that pedestrian and vehicular safety is maintained within the town

Residents are asked to review a copy of the Draft Traffic By-law and the Rationale Handout for more information.

Staff will bring forward the revised Traffic By-law to the General Government Committee on November 9, 2020. The town is encouraging feedback from the public.

  1. This is impractical for many households with grown children still at home due to economic times. There are countless homes in this situation with multiple adults who need cars, living in the same household. Many have no choice but to park on the bottom boulevard. With strict bi-laws for overnight street parking (even in the summer!)what other choice do people have?

Many other towns in Durham have much more livable bi-laws when it comes to residential parking. WHY HAS AJAX MADE LIFE SO DIFFICULT FOR ITS RESIDENTS???

  2. Perhaps when these new home developments were approved, additional parking should have been considered. Why can’t I park on the part of the driveway I am required to shovel? I get the roads, especially in the winter but I can guarantee my whole neighbourhood would be impacted by this. Such a shame if this happens.

  3. They want money. They are not interested in living in harmony with the residents of this town. They figure there’s money to be had, period. Not solving and problems. They approved the housing layout, very big houses with multi generations living in them. Our neighborhood started with a lot of new families, now the kids are growing up and taking up a parking space in the driveway. Only solution, move out of the town of Ajax.

  4. This is absolutely ridiculous!!! They are looking for more ways to raise money. Who came up with this? Scrap these by-laws. This recommendation clearly didn’t come from the community.

  5. The Town of Ajax is going to have even MORE complaints if they put the bylaw in force about prohibiting parking on the apron. I agree that before approving the new developments that they should make it a rule to have sufficient parking space in the driveway. Most families have more than two people driving and have more than two cars in the driveway. I guess the Town wants give tickets out to all the new sub divisions in Ajax.

  6. This is crap. Ajax just wants more money. I just received a parking ticket at 2:25 pm today stating parked in excess of 3 hrs. This was during the day. Wtf. I am pissed.
So in other words no one can visit you or if they do they have to leave with in 3hrs.

  7. This is ridiculous in times when there are growing families, and multiple generations in certain households. People are pretty much forced to have multiple cars for work and travel, because they don’t or can’t find employment in Ajax. Or can’t afford to buy their own home. Sounds like a cash cow to take money from people who are already struggling from this economy. Whatever happened to humanity and compassion for your people. Come on Ajax this isn’t right and you know it. I guess i’ll be moving in the near future. Probably to another Province other than Onterrible.

  8. I agree 100% this is a money grab and nothing else. I would like clarification regarding who is complaining re parking at 1 am -3am compared to 3am-6am? is this such a critical time for pedestrians? Complaints come in because of awareness of by-laws (more by-laws more complaints), grumpy neighbours who have nothing better to do, so thank you now they can complain more than before… no by-laws no complaints. Their rationalization for these changes, along with clearing up confusion in enforcement is absolute non-sense!

  9. This is ridiculous not to park overnight on streets, is there any rush hour, School traffic or street cleaning on this time from 1am to 5 am daily?????
Not only this, person with handicap permit are also not allowed to park overnight on street. This is contradiction to Ontario Human Right codes, and consider as discrimination against disable person.
Rather then give relief to local residents in his covid/emergency times, city is giving them hardship. Strange
We are already paying the max taxes to city, now they need extra in the form of parking infarction……..

  10. Who was I bothering last night in my north ajax neighborhood that I got a ticket on the road at 2:20 am just 35 mins after I came home. The fact I need a permit to park between 1 and 5 is ridiculous. My neighbors have nothing better to do at 2 am than watch me.

  11. During fall, spring and summer months there is no reason to be giving out tickets for parking on the street overnight…this is a money grab from the town…period! I live on a caldasac where one side are houses and the other side there are no houses. Who is anyone bothering by parking around the perimeter of the street where no houses are? It’s ridiculous for the town to be giving out tickets year round.

  12. When I asked a parking enforcer why they are ticketing during the day. They replied that they only come if someone calls them.
In my case it’s the nosy neighbour who has nothing else to do during the long weekend. She also has admitted it to everyone. I guess it’s better to park on the front lawn rather than on the road. Where cars belong. Ajax needs real leaders to fix its residence’s concerns, not create more.

  13. It is impossible to have 1.25 meters between driveways and cars, the width of our house property is shorter than my car. BEWARE … AJAX bylaw bitches ticket first before chalking tyres, caught one guy doing this and recorded on iPod, went to court with ticketed party, judge threw out and scolded the bylaw bitch in public.

  14. I agree to all of you. But if you are leaving in my street and we all have double driveway which means you can park at least 4 cars on the driveway or maybe 3 plus 2 in the garage. Forget about the inside for now. That’s 4 cars minimum, that would be maybe enough. But with a house in the street who has 2 extra pick-up truck with trailers on then and at times a bobcat during landscaping season plus and extra 3 car aside from the 4 on the driveway that parks on the street and occupies the whole street side. They have been using the street as their parking garage. That’s so aggravating especially when you need to make a turn to enter the street or make a turn on the curb. Their is no space to go. The street becomes a single lane instead of having 2 lanes. The worse part is in the winter, our side of the street when the plowers can’t get by. Oh by the way, plowers were complaining but they leave the big portion unplowed until the next round. That’s hoping those cars leave or get ticketted, the bylaw officers never come in our street or if they do that would be maybe once a year when they feel like it. Also I did personally complained about those trucks and trailers parking in 2019 but apparently bylaws office can’t be bothered also the plowers every winter couldn’t be bothered to anymore and just leave the portion unplowed. So I feel for everyone who got a ticket unreasonably but in my neighborhood’s case this one residence has made our street like a huge parking garage all year round. Yes the half of the neighborhood complained and had spoken to the residents of the house concerned but their answer was it’s public parking that they have the right to park on the street. So it’s up to the bylaw officers to their job because it seems they have been getting away from this since they moved in our neighborhood . Rumor has it that this resident know someone in the bylaw office that is why they can do whatever they want. I don’t believe the rumor or how it started but this is an old neighborhood and people have been living here from beginning, kids grew up here, moved out then grandchildren. Not until around 2017 new and younger generations moving into the neighborhood, most are very respectful and considerate but it only takes one to ruin the neighhood and everyone has that in their own neighborhood. I just want the bylaw do their job and ticket on their on discretion like pick-up trucks with trailers and bobcats, I think that is worth ticketing.

  15. There’s no parking in Ajax and they shouldn’t prohibit apron parking!! Where else are people supposed to park who have tenants (in my case)? Children? Husband and wife? Multigenerational families etc? Are these people crazy? Why the hell do we pay so much taxes? Parking on the street times shouldn’t be changed either!! What the hell is happening? Does the government have nothing better to do?

  16. I think keeping residential streets free during the day makes sense so as to not impede traffic, and create potentially dangerous driving conditions. Plus all those cars on the streets are an eyesore. I’m not sure of the rationale with overnight street parking as there is less traffic but yeah it does make you think twice on how you use your space. I know for a fact that people have way too much junk. There are plenty of cars parked on driveways now in the middle of winter and you know that there are no other cars in the garages caused they are used for storage of junk.

  17. Well, as a new resident to Ajax and renting a basement apartment this bylaw is definitely ridiculous. Home owner has 2 vehicles. Park on the roof of the house I guess.

  18. I went to my friends house to chill I leave at 2am and his driveway already has 3 cars since his whole family drives so I parked in front of his house on the street and I got a ticket. This is fucking ridiculous who ever came up with this law is the most brain dead fucking moron. It’s may, this law should only apply during winter when the snow plows are out. But during spring, summer and fall, that is so fucking dumb. Next time I’ll just park on the grass or maybe on top his house? Good job Ajax no wonder everyone’s leaving. Dog shit ass town, dog shit ass law. Y’all need find better ways to get money from people.

  19. Yea 4 people in the house 4 cars. My son comes to visit and I have to find some place to park not in front of my house. It’s not winter!! I should be able to park in front of my house and I am not filling out your stupid form you want so much information might as well tell you my vin as well. You want my first born?
