Clarington’s Veteran’s Square to undergo extensive upgrade

The Municipality of Clarington yesterday announced that over the next few months, Veteran’s Square in Bowmanville will undergo an extensive renovation to create a new “vibrant and welcoming space for people of all abilities”.

Once complete, Veteran’s Square will feature five new flag poles, raised gardens, accessible seating, paved pathways, a service animal relief area and mobility device charging stations, said a municipal statement.

Construction is expected to begin the week of May 6, with the renovations scheduled to be completed in time for the Remembrance Day Service on November 11.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • To ensure the safety of the community, temporary fencing will be erected around the site for the duration of the project.
  • The main entrance on Temperance Street and the accessible Church Street entrance will remain open during regular business hours.
  •  Local businesses along Temperance Street will remain open and accessible.
  • A section of sidewalk and on-street metered parking on the west side of Temperance Street will be blocked off. Parking spaces on the east side of the street will remain open.
  • Residents and businesses in the area may experience brief periods of noise between 7 am and 5 pm.

Veteran’s Square is located at the Municipal Administrative Centre at 40 Temperance Street, and is a community space that hosts civic events and is the focal point of Clarington’s Remembrance Service.

The renovated space will provide more opportunities for residents to connect with the community and honour the sacrifices and achievements of the local men and women who served in Canada’s military in times of war, military conflict and peace.
