A temporary helipad for Bowmanville Hospital, announced in March 2021, is yet to be granted approval by Transport Canada.
September 7, 2018 was the last time that air ambulance Ornge landed at the Bowmanville helipad, according to Durham Paramedics (CUPE).
In March 2021, Bowmanville Hospital’s temporary helipad site was identified on Haines Street, according to an announcement by Lakeridge Health. Construction was scheduled to begin in July 2021 and was expected to be completed in October 2021 (see related stories below).
In an optimistic update provided on Tuesday May 14, Lakeridge Health said: “Thanks to the Municipality of Clarington’s support, the temporary helipad will be located on Haines Street pending final approvals from Transport Canada.
“We are pleased to announce the upcoming operation of the temporary Bowmanville Hospital helipad. After the hospital’s helipad ceased operations due to safety concerns and the need to relocate for future redevelopment, Lakeridge Health collaborated with ORNGE Air Ambulance Service and various government partners to secure a new site,” said the Lakeridge update.
“This temporary site will accommodate emergency air transportation until a permanent rooftop helipad is completed as part of the Bowmanville Hospital redevelopment plan,” it added.
