Ontario to honour ‘outstanding volunteer’ from Durham

The Ontario government is honouring 14 exceptional individuals – including one from Clarington – and two volunteer organizations with the 2024 June Callwood Outstanding Achievement Award for Voluntarism.

This award is in memory of the late author and journalist, June Callwood, and recognizes the leadership, innovation and contributions of individual volunteers, volunteer administrators and volunteer organizations who support their communities and help build a stronger Ontario.

Marion Saunders from Newcastle is among the award winners. As President of the Auxiliary of Lakeridge Health Oshawa, she leads volunteers dedicated to improving care. With the Canadian Forces Chapel Guild, Marion supported the families of armed forces personnel. She also serves as a Lay Minister with the Anglican Church. Marion has developed a certification process for Volunteer Administrators, strengthening voluntarism in Ontario, said her citation.

Marion Elizabeth Saunders won the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers in 1999 and is also a recipient of the Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award

“On behalf of all Ontarians, I want to congratulate the recipients of the 2024 June Callwood Outstanding Achievement Award for Voluntarism,” said Michael Ford, Minister of Citizenship and Multiculturalism. “We are grateful for the dedication and selfless service of these outstanding Ontarians. You continue to inspire others and make our province a stronger and more vibrant place to live, work and raise a family.”

The June Callwood Outstanding Achievement Award for Voluntarism is awarded annually to up to 25 individuals or organizations in recognition of their long-standing, positive impact on the lives of their fellow community members.

This year, the June Callwood Outstanding Achievement Award for Voluntarism will be presented during the Volunteer Service Awards ceremonies in each recipient’s community. The award ceremonies will take place provincewide, from May until July.
