Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) yesterday clarified that because of the SIU mandate, it is not able to answer any questions related to the fatal crash that resulted in the deaths of four persons on Monday evening.
The crash was the end result of a police pursuit of a cargo van suspected to be involved in a robbery at LCBO in Bowmanville in Clarington. The van driver got on to Highway 401 the wrong way causing a crash which resulted in the deaths of a passenger, and two other adults and an infant, according to Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU).
On Monday evening, SIU invoked its mandate related to a fatal collision on Highway 401 in Whitby, said a DRPS advisory.
“This incident has had a profound impact on our community and our members. We understand there are many questions, however there is a legislated process regarding investigations conducted by the SIU that our service must adhere to. DRPS is fully cooperating with the SIU and as such are unable to make a public statement on this incident,” said the DRPS.
“At this time our thoughts are with those impacted by this tragedy,” it said adding that: “Anyone with questions or information about this incident is asked to contact the Special Investigations Unit at 1-800-787-8529.”
Deeply Saddened
The fatalaties took place on a stretch between Brock Street and Lake Ridge Road in Whitby.
“I was deeply saddened to hear that four people, including a baby, lost their lives on Highway 401 in Whitby,” said Mayor Elizabeth Roy.
“My thoughts are with the family and friends of those who died and the first responders who attended the scene. The community mourns with all those impacted by this tragedy.”
