MTO coming weekend plans for demolition of 401 bridges

The City of Oshawa has announced that the Simcoe Street South bridge is to be closed from May 3 to 6.

The Ministry of Transportation (MTO) is replacing the Simcoe Street South and Albert Street overpass structures along Highway 401 in Oshawa.

As part of the construction operations, there will be a full closure of the Simcoe Street Bridge from Bloor Street to the westbound on-ramp and closure of the eastbound Simcoe Street off-ramp. This closure is to prepare for the second half of the bridge to be demolished by preparing the area for traffic to use the newly created half of the Simcoe Street bridge, said a city statement.

The closure will be in effect starting Friday, May 3 at 9 pm until 6 am on Monday, May 6.

During this period, detour routes will be implemented to divert the vehicle traffic around the closed portion of Simcoe Street. These detour routes are summarized as follows:

  • Highway 401 eastbound off-ramp: Drivers can exit at Stevenson Street eastbound off- ramp or at the Ritson Street eastbound off-ramp.
  • Northbound traffic on Simcoe Street: Traffic will be detoured west on Bloor Street to Stevenson Road where they will head north and then head east on Gibb Street to Simcoe Street South.
  • Southbound traffic on Simcoe Street: Traffic will be detoured east on Olive Avenue to Ritson Road outh. where they will head south.

Access to the Highway 401 westbound on-ramp from Simcoe Street North will remain open throughout this closure.
