Multi-vehicle collision with fatalities on Highway 401

Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) last night reported multi-vehicle collision with fatalities on Highway 401, while Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said delays caused by the investigation could extend into the morning rush hour.

The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate, OPP added.

Durham Police said officers were called to a robbery in Clarington. The suspect fled when police arrived and a pursuit was initiated.

The suspect proceeded onto the Highway 401 in the opposite direction, resulting in a multi-vehicle collision with fatalities.

Meanwhile, the OPP Highway Safety Division said Highway 401 was closed in both directions between Lake Ridge Riad and Brock Street in Whitby.

The incident took place eastbound east of Highway 412, whose southbound lanes were closed with no access to Highway 401 eastbound.

OPP said investigation work could take all night and into the early morning rush hour. Alternate roads are Victoria Street to the south and Highway 2 to the north.

It was not announced tilll late last night as to  how many were killed and how many injured. Further information was to follow, DRPS said.
