This is particularly important in Canada, where foundations are exposed to significant seasonal changes. Freeze-thaw cycles, snow accumulation, spring melt, heavy rainfall, and fluctuating soil moisture can all place stress on foundation walls and basement drainage systems.

An unfinished basement also provides something that becomes much harder to obtain after a renovation: visibility. Exposed concrete walls and floors make it easier to notice cracks, moisture staining, mineral deposits, movement, and other conditions that could otherwise be hidden behind finished surfaces.
