Effort on to create a more connected Oak Ridges Moraine Trail

Effort has begun to create a more connected, accessible, welcoming, and enjoyable Oak Ridges Moraine Trail, which promoters say has the potential to become one of Ontario’s signature trail experiences.

Today, the 268 km trail includes road sections and gaps that can make it challenging for people to experience it as one connected journey.

“Improving connections along the trail can create more opportunities for people to explore the moraine, spend time outdoors, and build meaningful connections with this important landscape,” said a statement from Greenbelt Foundation.

It said a key component of the new effort is the first major public engagement in more than 20 years, which will provide an opportunity for people to share their perspectives and help shape its future.

The workshops are organized by the Greenbelt Foundation and the Oak Ridges Trail Association (ORTA), and run from August 10 to October 12.

The project includes an online survey and in-person community workshop(s) at three locations along the trail.

  • Uxbridge: September 17, Thursday, from 6.30 pm to 8.30 pm, Uxbridge Senior Centre, 75 Marietta Street, Uxbridge, ON L9P 1J5
  • Richmond Hill: September 19, Saturday, from 2 pm to 4 pm, Elgin West Community Centre & Pool, 11099 Bathurst Street, Richmond Hill, ON L4C 0N2
  • Port Hope: September 22, Tuesday, 6.30 pm 8.30 pm, Jack Burger Sports Complex, 60 Highland Drive, Port Hope, ON L1A 3Z7

The statement said public input will help identify opportunities to create a trail that is more connected, accessible, welcoming, and enjoyable for everyone. Ultimately, this public engagement is centred on one question: What would make the Oak Ridges Moraine Trail a better trail for people to explore, enjoy, and return to for generations to come?
