Chestnut Hill closed today, Whitby reopens

Chestnut Hill Developments Recreation Complex is closed today due to unanticipated power failure, according to the City of Pickering.

It was closed yesterday too, said a statement without explaining the cause of the power failure.

“Please be advised that the Chestnut Hill Developments Recreation Complex is closed due to an unanticipated power failure. We will be closed Thursday, February 25 to Friday, February 26 inclusive. Please consult pickering.ca for any further information as the situation may evolve,” the statement said.

Whitby Recreation Facilities and Community Centres open March 1

Meanwhile, Whitby announced a phased-approach to safely reopen recreation facilities and community centres. Under the “Red-Control” level of the Provincial Framework, fitness and recreation centres are allowed to reopen with protective measures in place. The Town’s top priority continues to be the health and well-being of its staff and residents.

Based on these new provincial restrictions, public access to, and activity permitted within, the Town of Whitby’s facilities will change as follows:

Recreation Facilities

The Whitby Civic Recreation Complex Health Club will re-open by appointment on Monday, March 1. Health Club members wishing to book an appointment can do so up to five days in advance of their workout time at whitby.ca/getactive.

Registration opens Thursday, February 25 at 9 a.m. For more information visit, whitby.ca/healthclub

Anne Ottenbrite Pool at Iroquois Park Sports Centre will re-open by appointment on Monday, March 1, 2021. Residents wishing to book an appointment for a recreational swim can do so up to five days in advance of their swim time at whitby.ca/getactive.

Registration opens Thursday, February 25 at 9 a.m. A number of amenities, including showers, are closed to help reduce the risk of Covid-19 transmission. For more information visit, whitby.ca/swimming

Because of the Covid-19 closure period, all recreation memberships will be extended to compensate for the lost time. Community Centres

Effective March 1, 2021, limited space at some Whitby community centres will be open for private bookings. Groups interested in booking a space can email facilities@whitby.ca or call 905.668.7765 to learn more about space availability.

The Town is also working in partnership with the Region to support its community-based vaccination clinics, with the McKinney Centre location being made available. To learn more visit Durham Region Public Health.

Health and Safety Measures

Health and safety measures continue to be in place at all recreation facilities and community centres and must be followed by all who enter the facilities. Visitors are required to complete a visitor self-screening questionnaire in advance of their visit and must adhere to public health guidelines while in attendance. Team Sports

No game play or scrimmages are allowed at this time. However, skill development and training can continue. As such, arena permits can continue under the updated criteria below:

  • The limit of 10 people applies to members of the public participating in classes, organized programs or organized activities.
  • No spectators are permitted, except for one parent or guardian for youth under the age of 18.
  • Change rooms and locker rooms are not available, participants need to enter the building dressed (as much as possible).
  • Teams must follow and review Return to Play guidelines.
