Cork & Bean apologizes to customer over racial ‘incident’

A recent incident occurred at a Cork & Bean in Oshawa. The establishment describes itself as a modern-rustic hangout for espresso and light bites, plus local wine, craft beer & choice liquors’.

The establishment released a social media statement on March 24 about the incident where a customer was asked to leave the premises.

We recognize that what occurred had a particular impact on members of the Jewish community, and we are deeply sorry for that. We consider this matter resolved and will not be making further public comment, said the statement.

It stated that the establishment representatives “have spoken directly with the customers involved, listened to their experience, and apologized for how the situation unfolded”.

The statement started off by saying that “a recent incident at our cafe was not handled in a way that met our standards. We took this seriously, conducted a thorough internal investigation, and have taken appropriate steps to address it.”

Social Media Rumors

The business continued saying that: “We are aware that incomplete and inaccurate accounts of this incident have circulated online. We have conducted a thorough investigation and the facts as established do not reflect those accounts”.

The business said that “At Cork & Bean we are committed to providing a welcoming and respectful environment for every person who walks through our doors, staff and customers alike.

Cork & Bean added that it does not discriminate against any customer on the basis of who they are, where they come from, their beliefs, or their national origin and that the commitment is “non-negotiable and applies equally to everyone”.

It added that they “are not in a position to comment further on this matter. We remain dedicated to being a space where our community feels genuinely welcome. We will continue to hold ourselves to that standard”.

On the social media post regarding the incident; comments were mostly supportive of the business. Many of the commenters expressed that the space is very inclusive and that they have nothing but positive experiences there.

Cork & Bean has limited who can comment on the Facebook post.
