Driver Alert: Scugog announces lower speed limits

In an effort to improve safety for all road users (vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians, etc.), drivers will soon see new speed limit signs installed for roads across the Township of Scugog.

Scugog is implementing a new policy that reduces speed limits on all rural roads from 80 kmh to 60 kmh, collector roads in urban areas, such as Old Simcoe Road and Union Avenue, will remain at 50 kmh and local roads in Port Perry and hamlets would be reduced to 40 kmh.  Speed limits in school zones will remain at 40 kmh, said a township announcement.

These lower speed limits will apply only to township roads and will not apply to regional roads (Simcoe Street, Reach Street, Island Road, etc.) or provincial highways such as Highway 7A or Highway 12.

Signs will be installed on all rural roads and at gateway points to all urban areas.  Approximately 650 signs will be installed in total by the end of June 2022.

The policy was approved by council following a Township Wide Speed Limit Review prepared by staff in October 2020 and is part of several initiatives being undertaken to reduce speeding and speed related collisions.

Other initiatives have included creating Community Safety Zones in front of all elementary schools, using mobile speed display boards across the township, a lawn sign campaign aimed at reducing speeds and approval of a new traffic calming policy.
