Driver crashes into police cruiser, flees… but not far

A suspect was arrested after fleeing from police and striking a police cruiser in Oshawa.

On Monday, May 10, 2021, at approximately 10:55 a.m., a member of Central East Division Community Response Unit was conducting traffic enforcement in the area of Mary Street North, in Oshawa. The officer attempted to stop a vehicle that was travelling at a high rate of speed. The suspect vehicle failed to stop, striking the police cruiser and a tree in an attempt to evade the officer. The suspect vehicle fled, driving in a dangerous manner, and officers discontinued the pursuit in the interest of public safety.

Minutes later, officers from Central East Division located the suspect vehicle continuing to drive in a dangerous manner and attempted to stop the vehicle. The suspect vehicle again fled from officers and a brief pursuit was called off due to public safety.

At approximately 11:15 a.m. officers were dispatched to a fail to remain collision involving the suspect vehicle in the area of Darcy Street, in Oshawa. Responding officers located the vehicle in the area of Wilson Road and Rossland Road and a pursuit was again initiated. Upon entering a dead-end street, the suspect exited the vehicle and fled on foot. Following a foot pursuit, and with the assistance of the public and K-9 Unit, the suspect was taken into custody.

The suspect in question is Jahan Gittens, age 37, of Falby Court in Ajax is charged with: Flight from Police Officer x3; Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance x3; Leave Accident Scene Fail to Give Name x2; Possess Property Obtained by Crime; Driving While Under Suspension; Owner Operate Motor Vehicle No Insurance; and Speeding.
