401 Crashes: Driver drifts into rail, ricochets to other side ++

Plus: Highway maintenance contract worker struck by a vehicle

Two accidents along Highway 401 yesterday were reported by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Highway Safety Division.

One of them happened during morning rush hour and required lane closures, which were scheduled to reopen by 8:30 am.

The first happened on Highways 427 ramp to Highway 401 eastbound in Oshawa.

OPP said a 24-year-old driver from Oshawa drifted onto the road shoulder and struck the guide rail and was subsequently redirected to the opposite side guide rail before coming to rest.

The driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries, OPP said adding that all lanes were expected to reopen by 8:30am.

Investigation is ongoing and charges are pending, it added.

Hwy 401 maintenance worker struck, driver flees

The second incident took place on Highway 401 westbound at Westney Road in Ajax.

A road maintenance contractor worker was struck by a vehicle while conducting pothole repairs. Minor injuries were reported.

The involved vehicle failed to remain at the scene. Police have obtained information related to that vehicle and will be following up with the driver, said the OPP.

Large police presence in Whitby

Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) yesterday said it has completed an investigation and that the affected area in Whitby has been cleared.

It did not specify the nature of the investigation, but did promise an update. No further details were available till late last night.

Earlier, DRPS said there was a large police presence in the area of Green Street from St. Lawrence Street to Clemence Avenue for a police investigation.

“This is an isolated incident and there are no concerns for public safety. Please avoid the area. Update to follow,” it said.

Clarington road closure after person hurt

DRPS also reported a road closure in Bowmanville, in the Municipality of Clarington.

Regional Road 3 was closed from Old Scugog Road to Holt Road due to a single motor vehicle collision, it said.

One person has been taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, DRPS said.
