Lynn Heights murder captured on video: Moreira

Last May’s murder at Lynn Heights in Pickering by a 14-year old boy, was captured on video, according to Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) Chief Peter Moreira.

“The brutality and gratuitous nature of this crime—captured on video—is shocking, and it underscores the dangerous influence that online platforms can have on young people,” he said in response to a Thursday’s report that the boy has pleased guilty in court.

“This senseless murder has devastated a family, deeply affected the DRPS officers who responded, and shaken the entire Pickering community,” said Chief Moreira.

“It also raises serious questions about the responsibility of those who knew what was going to happen and failed to act,” he added.

Videos of the boy that emerged at that time, showed the suspect muttering to himself.

At the request of the family, the victim’s identity had not been released.

Last August, DRPS confirmed the suspect, a Pickering suspect, had been charged with first-degree murder.

Officers from West Division responded to a call around 3:05 pm on Thursday, May 29, in the area of Lynn Heights Drive and Fairport Road. A passerby had discovered an elderly woman on the ground outside a residence, suffering from what police described as traumatic injuries. She was transported to a Toronto trauma centre, where she was later pronounced dead.

Pickering Mayor Kevin Ashe had called the second Durham murder of 2025 a “tragic and senseless act of violence”.
