Homicide update

Durham police have charged a 14-year-old boy with first-degree murder following the death of a woman in Pickering.

According to investigators, officers from West Division responded to a call around 3:05 pm on Thursday, May 29, in the area of Lynn Heights Drive and Fairport Road. A passerby had discovered an elderly woman on the ground outside a residence, suffering from what police described as traumatic injuries. She was transported to a Toronto trauma centre, where she was later pronounced dead.

Police initially reported the suspect as 13-years old but have since confirmed he is 14. He was arrested without incident at about 8:30 pm after an extensive search.

The teen, a resident of Pickering, has been charged with first-degree murder and remains in custody pending a bail hearing. Police did not mention any motive for the crime.

At the request of the family, the victim’s identity has not been released.

Mayor’s statement

Pickering Mayor Kevin Ashe has issued a public statement following the murder of a local woman in what he described as a “tragic and senseless act of violence”.

“We extend our deepest condolences to her family and loved ones as they face this devastating loss, and the city stands ready to offer any support possible during this most difficult time,” Ashe said.

He also acknowledged the swift response from law enforcement. “I extend my thanks to the Durham Regional Police and all the other police agencies who responded to this terrible situation and brought it to quick resolve,” Ashe said.

Reflecting on the gravity of the incident, Ashe noted, “Having lived here for most of my life, I know Pickering to be a safe and close-knit community. A horrific tragedy like this is truly unprecedented, and while there will be much discussion and speculation in the days ahead, I ask for patience as the police investigation continues, as well as privacy for the victim’s family.”

The mayor called on the community to unite in compassion and support.

“For now, let us come together as a community to remember the victim, support her loved ones, and grieve together. While this is an extremely difficult time for us all, particularly for the victim’s family and friends, I know that we will unite in strength and compassion as we begin the long journey toward healing,” Ashe said.
