Durham manager cycles 600km to Montreal for charity

A casual conversation inspired a manager at one of Durham insitutions to don her cycling gear, get on her bike and go for a 600km ride for charity.

From August 4th to August 9th, Seasons Clarington’s Health & Wellness Manager, Rebecca Rose, participated in the ‘Friends for Life Bike Rally’, cycling 600 km from Toronto to Montreal to support people living with AIDS.

“Rebecca’s involvement in this event happened most serendipitously after she learned about the rally from a friend while walking home from work. The cause and its physical challenge immediately inspired her,” said a statement from Seasons Clarington.

“When we first learned about her journey, the residents and I knew we had to support her every step of the way. Seeing her push through the challenges with such heart and determination reminded us of all the incredible impact one person can have,” said Kim Mitchell, Seasons Clarington General Manager. “This rally isn’t just about the miles she’s covered; it’s about the lives she’s touched and the awareness she’s raised. Being there to cheer her on was a powerful moment for our community, bringing us closer together and reaffirming our commitment to supporting meaningful causes.”

Kim organized a trip with a couple of her Seasons Clarington residents to cheer Rebecca on during one leg of the rally (top image). Residents gathered with signs, pom-poms, and red attire, a symbol of the rally’s efforts to combat the stigma surrounding AIDS. They were moved by Rebecca’s dedication and courage, seeing her as a healthcare professional and a passionate advocate for change.

Rebecca, who is dedicating this ride to her late captain and mentor, Jeff Otto, is passionate about raising awareness for the advancements in AIDS treatment and the ongoing stigma surrounding the disease. She hopes that participating in this rally can help shift perceptions and encourage others to do the same. The rally’s third day, when all participants wore red dresses for the ride to Kingston, was a powerful symbol.

For the residents, seeing Rebecca’s dedication has been incredibly moving. They’ve known her as a dedicated nurse, but this ride has shown them a new side of her: a woman of great fortitude and compassion. They couldn’t have been prouder to support her on this journey.
