Durham moves to contain Orchard Villa outbreak

Whitby: Durham Health has swung into action after Orchard Villa long term care home in Pickering reported 31 Covid-19 related deaths.

“We are currently working very closely with our partners at Lakeridge Health to provide assistance to Orchard Villa with this outbreak and our legal teams are working together to enable Lakeridge Health to provide this support. More details will be available once this order has been finalized,” said Dr. Robert Kyle, Durham Region Medical Officer of Health.

“We are sincerely saddened by the deaths of residents at Orchard Villa in Pickering. We extend our sincere condolences to all families affected by this tragic loss and our thoughts are with them during this very sad time,” he said.

Health Department staff has been working with all area long-term care homes and retirement homes to provide guidance and information that can help to reduce the risks for both residents and staff of these homes, he said.

“We understand that this is a very difficult and stressful time for families who have loved ones living in long-term care homes and retirement homes. Residents in long-term care homes and retirement homes are some of the most vulnerable members of our community and are at significantly greater risk of becoming ill from Covid-19 and suffering serious health consequences. Every one of us has a responsibility to do everything we can to ensure that all members of our community are protected,” added Dr. Kyle.
