Durham Police warns residents of new Mr. Fix-it scam

Durrham Regional PoliceSerice (DRPS) has issued a new scam alert, saying door-to-door frauds are on the rise.

DRPS said it has seen a rise in roofing door-to-door scams convincing home owners they have roofing and beam issues.

Scammers offer to fix the problems for a large amount of money, and they can be forceful and pushy.

Under the Consumer Protection Act, certain products and services cannot be offered or sold at your home unless you initiate the transaction. For example, by calling or emailing a business and asking them to come to your home for the purpose of entering into a contract, police explained.

“Unfortunately, roofing services is not on the list, and we are seeing a rise in roofing door-to-door scams,” said a police alert.
