Man finds out it’s a crime to take from donation bins

Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) yesterday reminded the public that items in a donation bin are the property of the organization to which the bin belongs.

“Did you know that once an item is dropped off at a donation bin, it becomes the property of that organization? It is a criminal offence to remove any such items,” it said after a suspect was taken into custody on Wednesday.

On June 21, members of DRPS Central West Division reponded to a call for theft at a donation bin in the area of Kendalwood Road and Dundas Street East in Whitby.

Officers quickly located the suspect and a short foot pursuit ensued, resulting in the suspect being taken into custody.

The 35-year old man is facing charges and was released on an undertaking, police said.

“Great work by members of DRPS Central West Division in quickly locating and arresting a suspect,” said the police.
