Whitby has opened a new public streetside patio in the heart of Downtown.
It is located in front of Brock St. Espresso, Lashes By Design, and Le Chic Boutique on Brock St S (125 to 131 Brock Street South).
The patio was developed in partnership with the Downtown Whitby Business Improvement Area (BIA) and is a part of the Downtown Whitby Action Plan aimed at creating a more walkable, vibrant and active downtown.
The patio temporarily repurposes two on-street parking spots to create an open-air outdoor seating space along with two accessible picnic tables and four Adirondack Chairs donated by the Downtown Whitby BIA. The project also includes a dedicated walkway to ensure there is a continued pedestrian pathway on Brock Street along with a bike rack. The patio will be open all summer long and will remain open until late fall, weather permitting.
The Downtown Whitby Action Plan was approved by Council in October 2016. To date, 24 of the 27 action items (or 88 per cent) – including the creation of a streetside patio – have either been completed or are in progress. Other action items completed from the Plan include the establishment of a new Community Improvement Plan and the installation of new LED tree lights along Brock and Dundas Streets.
