Force of crash ejects driver; man in critical condition

A Pickering man was rushed to hospital following a collision in Ajax on Friday evening, police said.

At approximately 5:18 pm, on May 22, members of West Division responded to the report of a motor vehicle collision involving two motor vehicles. The collision occurred just west of the intersection of Rossland Road and Lake Ridge Road in Ajax, said a police media update.

A white Toyota Sienna was eastbound on Rossland Road driven by a 33-year old Whitby female along with her two young passengers when the vehicle was struck by a grey Mercedes. The Mercedes, driven by a 29-year-old Pickering male crossed the solid yellow center lane and struck the Toyota, it said.

The front drivers side of the Mercedes struck the front drivers corner of the eastbound vehicle. After the initial collision, the Mercedes lost control and rolled, the driver was ejected. The driver was assisted by a witness, until paramedics arrived on scene, police said.

The male driver was transported to a local hospital and then air lifted to a Toronto-Trauma Centre in critical condition. The driver and two passengers from the Toyota received minor injuries, it added.

The road was closed for several hours while members from the Collision Investigation Unit collected evidence to determine the cause of the collision.

Speed and alcohol may have been a factor in the collision.

Anyone with new information about this investigation or if witnesses saw the vehicles prior to the collision are requested to contact D/Cst. Lee of the DRPS Collision Investigation Bureau at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5231.
