Construction works on the Green Road rail bridge in Bowmanville, in the Municipality of Clarington, are in full swing, according to Metrolinx, the operator of GO Transit.
The latest to go up are gravel access roads at Green Road Bridge.
With access roads to the rail corridor now complete, Bowmanville Extension crews are preparing for the next major milestone: constructing the bridge foundations, said Metrolinx.
Works are already well advanced at the Simcoe and Farewell streets bridges (see below).
The Green Road bridge is also a two year project. Metrolinx is constructing an above-grade rail bridge on Green Road (see below) next to the existing Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) rail bridge, north of Aspen Springs Drive and south of Clarington Boulevard.
Next In Line
According to a Metrolinx timeline, the next in line is the construction of the new Courtice Road bridge will be followed by the construction of a new Harmony Road bridge in Oshawa.
Then will come the modification of the VIA Rail pedestrian bridge at Oshawa GO station.
Last of all will come the construction of new rail tracks, according to Metrolinx.
Once the infrastructure is completed, the project will go into the testing and commissioning phase.
Operational In 2041
It is projected to be running by 2041.
On January 30, Metrolinx had announced that it has awarded the major construction contract for the Bowmanville Extension, which will expand GO rail service farther into Durham Region.
The project will add 18.7 kilometres of new track to the Lakeshore East Line, extending service from Durham College Oshawa GO Station to the future site of Bowmanville GO Station.
