Gas leak near Whitby high school repaired, all safe

Durham District School Board (DDSB) yesterday announced that it was “glad” to report that the afternoon’s gas leak in the neighbourhood of Brooklin High School has now been repaired.

It thanked Whitby Fire (WFES) Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) for their quick response, support and giving the all clear.

Whitby Fire separately announced: “Update: After reports were received regarding the smell of natural gas @brooklinhs, crews have investigated and given the all clear.”

There were no reports of any injuries.

Roads around the area were cordoned off and after the all-clear DRPS said the roadways have been re-opened. Thanks for your patience.

Officers from DRPS Central West Division assisted Whitby Fire with traffic closures for a natural gas leak in the area of Carnwith Drive E. between Montgomery Avenue and Watford Street in Brooklin. Please avoid the area.

DDSB had earlier issued a shelter in place for the school as a precaution. School dismissal remained 4 pm.

Students were asked to exit south on Baldwin, south through the subdivision or west on Carnwith.

DDSB asked for windows to be kept closed. It also warned of traffic delays and thanked all for their patience.
